Römpp

Prof. Dr. Hermann Römpp, the builder of a great base of knowledge

RÖMPP SciCapsules are derived from the German original, “RÖMPP eLexicon of Chemistry”, which is considered one of the most important reference works in chemistry. Hermann Römpp founded this work in 1947 because there was no comprehensive German-language chemistry encyclopedia at the time. The first edition contained around 7,700 keywords.

Prof. Dr. Hermann Römpp (* February 18, 1901; † April 27, 1964) worked as a chemistry teacher. In addition to his teaching activities, he wrote numerous practical books for chemistry teachers, such as “Chemische Experimente, die gelingen” (Chemical Experiments that Work) and “Chemie des Alltags” (Everyday Chemistry). However, his greatest and most significant work is “The RÖMPP,” the chemistry encyclopedia.

After Prof. Römpp’s death, the reference work was continued by numerous experts. Thus far, more than 350 experts have contributed to its content. Today, both the German-language eLexicon and the RÖMPP SciCapsules are available in digital form and are continuously updated and expanded.
